SUMMER IS HERE!
Hey-o, internet people! (lol idk)
So summer has officially arrived (like two weeks ago but whatever) and I have so much work to do. I need to study my arse off, update this blog for you guys, work on the script for our annual school production, do the summer holiday homework (CURSE YOU, SCHOOL!), and work on my almost non-existent novel.
So what am I gonna do?
I’m gonna read.
#relatable
I’m not really the kind of person who makes a summer TBR – mostly I just read the stuff I want to read, whenever I want to read it.
So here’s a list of books I read recently and adored, along with books I really really want to read (if my library has them. Because I’m broke.)
(By the by, I linked all the book covers to their Goodreads pages. So just clicking on them should open up a new tab. 🙂 )
Books I loved:
- Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz. I’m not usually the kind of person who reads lots of YA novels, but John Green got me hooked into the genre. This book was beautifully written, and I cried at least ten times throughout the whole thing. It’s about two boys – Aristotle and Dante – trying to understand the mysteries of themselves, as well as things around them. Ari and Dante will forever live on in my heart. 🙂
- Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. Yet another YA novel. This book was hilarious and had me laughing so much I almost cried, but it was also heartwarming and kind of sad in a few places. The perfect combination, don’t you think? It was amazing, this book.
- Heartless by Marissa Meyer. I mainly read this because it was by Marissa Meyer, the author of the Lunar Chronicles. (Also because it was an Alice in Wonderland retelling, and I love Alice.) I was NOT disappointed. Basically, this is the story of how the Queen of Hearts came to be the Queen of Hearts. The ending made me cry so much 😦
- Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I read this because of all the hype surrounding the show (and you know me, I’d prefer reading a book to watching a movie/TV series). The beginning was interesting, but there were some bits in the middle that just lost me. Overall, though, it was a really good book – and much better than the TV show (which I watched two episodes of, but still.)
- Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. Initially, I shunned this book because I thought it was going to be a kiddish one. But then a friend started raving on about how good it was, so I borrowed it from her – and I was quite pleasantly surprised. It’s not childish at all – in fact, I think there are a few concepts which would be hard for children to grasp. It’s just a really fun, sometimes dark, action-filled book. (Also, while the movie was good and all, it was NOTHING like the book. They literally switched the names and abilities and looks of two characters! Like, it’s not even similar to the book!)
Books I really really want to read:
- Caraval by Stephanie Garber. Okay, so I actually did start reading this book – but for some reason I left it halfway through and started reading something else. (Am I the only one who does that?) But the book was actually really interesting and I’m looking forward to finishing it soon. (One of the main reasons I’m reading it is because of the cover. Isn’t it just beautiful?)
- Splintered by A. G. Howard. So I saw this series over on May’s (Forever and Everly) Summer TBR, and I read the first book – which was really good. In a psycho kind of way. Which is what the book is about. (It reminded me of the song Mad Hatter by Melanie Martinez… anyone else heard that song?) It’s basically an Alice in Wonderland retelling (and like I said before, I love Alice). I got the first book on my Kindle, but I’m hoping I can find the other books in the series in my library. (Because, like I mentioned, I’m broke.)
3. History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera. Because I really want to start reading more contemporary novels, and I heard that Adam Silvera is an amazing author. I read a sample of this book (thank you, Goodreads) and it seems interesting and heart-wrenching; it’s a definite yes.
4. More Happy than Not by Adam Silvera. Yep, another Adam Silvera book. What can I say? This guy seems amazing. And I’ve heard a lot of good things about this book, so hey – can’t hurt, right?
5. Shatter Me. Right, so one of my friends kept raving on and on and on about how amazing and beautiful this book was, and how I should really read it, because it was so good – and well, you get the idea. So that’s mainly why I’m reading this series. (Also because the cover is really pretty. 😀 )
I mean there’s probably way more books I have and should read, but I already have enough stuff to do. So.
Ahh these are all nice books!!! Also read more happy than not right now!!! Warning, you will sob your eyes out but it is in my top five books, Adam Silvera is amazing!!!!! All I can say is that having so much stuff but choosing to read instead is #relatable. (I’m currently pausing my tbr because over the weekend I read like 5 of them and sobbed my eyes out the entire time. I need an emotional break….)

I’m going to reply to my own comment because I forgot a couple things. First off your blog is so pretty??? How????? I love love love contemporaries!!!! It’s probably my favorite genre but I struggle because some of them are just so poorly done….. And I feel called out – I can’t finish books if I don’t like them… I don’t have the time or effort to do so. Finally I’m really bad about obsessing over authors, I usually never read more than the one book I liked by them because I’m #forgetful. (And how is this post so nice and great???? Teach me your ways)

I finished more happy than not like literally five minutes ago and IT WAS SO SAD I CRIED MY HEART OUT. collin whyyy I also read history is all you left me – the book was beautifully amazing and it made me cry as well. You’re right; Adam Silvera is amazing!!!! And about the needing an emotional break – I understand what you mean, completely. but sometimes, for me, i read sad stuff because it helps me forget my real life problems (if that makes sense?)

thank you thank you thank you!!! your blog is pretty amazing, too :3 and yaaasss contemporaries ftw!! yeah, i few are kind of hard to read – there are some books that have such amazing plots but are kind of badly executed?? if you know what i mean??? and the author obsession thing – i used to read only a few books by a single author but then my reading speed increased and there weren’t enough books to satisfy me; so i read every single book by all authors i knew of. i’m weird. and ha ha thanks for liking this post – there isn’t really much to teach; i think you know how to make posts nice and great. your writing style is awesome. 😀

Honestly I would die for Adam Silvera??? His books are all so good and pull at my heart strings. It’s really funny because I actually don’t cry that often (especially from books) but as soon as I crack open an Adam Silvera book my tear ducts know they’re about to get a workout. And the distraction from real life makes total sense! I just sometimes get in a headspace where everything is kind of sad and gloomy and if I read only sad and gloomy books to match that it’s kind of a downward spiral…. 😦 But to each their own!

Thank you!!!!!! And I feel like that’s the problem with contemporaries a lot because theres just so much to explore in that genre and not enough experienced writers. I feel like I kind of did the opposite, as I read through more books I got pickier and pickier and now I just won’t pick up or finish books I’m not enjoying. I love your writing style too!!!! And your posts are all so nice !!!!!! Thank you 🙂

Yes, yes, and yes! Some contemporaries are just so amazing they make me cry, while others are so bad they make me cry. And thank you!!! So much!!!!!! 😀

Yes, yes, yes!!! I hardly cry either, but some books are just… agh. Sad and gloomy books are amazing (what), but not when you’re in a sad and gloomy mood – I get that part. It makes everything feel worse. They’re just amazing distractions from real life drama lol

I don’t really read that much… but I’ve read a few of the books on here – Aristotle and Dante was really good, and so was Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens. I mean, books are great and all, but I’m too impatient to actually finish them – if that makes any sense. But the books on your TBR (what is that, anyway? To Be Read? Sorry if I seem dumb…) all sound really interesting and I wouldn’t mind giving them a go! And while I haven’t read the 13 Reasons Why book, I really liked the tv show. Lots of people are saying it’s very different from the book, though. And your blog is really pretty!! I like the layout and the pictures at the side are pretty funny. 😀

Eh, it’s fine if you don’t read much. As long as you get my bookworm problems and don’t hate books. You’re right, TBR stands for To Be Read. And don’t worry, it’s not a dumb question! I didn’t know what it meant when I came into the blogging community either. I actually didn’t like the 13 Reasons Why show that much – I mean it was okay but nahhh not my type. And thank you!! I’m so happy that you think it’s funny 😀

Oh my gosh I’m sooo the same way! I didn’t create a TBR for myself for summer either. I just created a general goal of “read more,” and have a general idea of a few books I’d like to finish during the season. I’ve also heard soooo many good things about Caraval though I might leave that to the autumn season because it sounds like it could be potentially creepy, which would just be perfect for the weather lol! (Also I really like the theme you’re using, it’s really cute!!!)

Yeah, I feel like it’s much more lax?? Like I don’t get this sense of disappointment when I don’t finish all the books. It’s nice knowing that I’m not the only one! Caraval was really good; maybe not the best but still worth a shot. And ha ha, you’re right about leaving it for autumn; it’s kind of haunting (?) and would be perfect to read in rainy weather. Too bad I already finished it. (And thank you! So much!!)

I love the way you start this post off, hahahaha 🙂
OMG, I’ve been reading so many excellent reviews of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe and still have YET to bring it home with me from the bookstore, and NOW I see it here too! Definitely going to be adding to my ever increasing TBR pile now!
Thanks for all the great recommendations here and good luck on your over the summer projects! Look forward to reading your upcoming blog posts/book reviews soon 🙂

I’m extremely impressed with your writing skills as well as with the layout on your weblog. Is this a paid theme or did you modify it yourself? Either way keep up the nice quality writing, it is rare to see a great blog like this one these days.
